If you would like to be a lifeguard at the Ghent Square pool this summer, please contact AAA Pools.
They offer training and employment for certified lifeguards, both full time and part time. While the training is free, the student must pay the $49 Red Cross fee and purchase a pocket mask for $10 from AAA for a total cost of $59, compared locally to $100-300 for a lifeguard class which is a significant savings! The student must be 15 years old in order to take the class. Proof of age is required in order to take the swim test.
Swim test dates:
May 17 – 9:30 – 10:30 AM
June 14 – 9:30 – 10:30 AM
In order to register for the lifeguard class, the student must take and pass a prerequisite swim test. The student must swim 150 yards using front crawl and breaststroke, tread water for two (2) minutes (using legs only) and then swim 50 yards. The second test is to swim to the deep end of the pool, surface dive, retrieve a 10 lb. diving brick and return to the start and climb out of the pool in less than 1 minute, 40 seconds
After passing the swim test, the student will be given the link to take the Blended Learning Online course from American Red Cross. Once that is completed, the student will then sign up for in-person classes in both CPR and water work.

The student must attend and pass the swim test in order to be registered for the lifeguard training course. The test will take place at Norfolk Academy and will be roughly 30-45 minutes long. Please register in advance by sending an email or calling (499-5852) for the swim test.
NOTE: AAA Pools also offers reimbursement of 50% of their class if the candidate takes the class somewhere else. They would need to work 150 hours in order to receive that benefit.
