Ghent was developed in the late 19th century as an early suburb connected to downtown by streetcars. The land was developed for single-family homes with lots of green space and waterfront areas. During and after World War II, there was a housing shortage. Many old homes in East Ghent were subdivided into rental properties. As a result, the area soon filled with poorly maintained boarding houses and apartments with overcrowded living conditions.
The Norfolk Housing Authority wanted to give people a viable housing choice that would change people’s attitudes about living in the city. After clearing 65 acres, the NHA redeveloped East Ghent as Ghent Square. Established May 23, 1976, Ghent Square grew to 463 homes. Featuring two pools, tennis and pickleball courts, playground and expansive green spaces, Ghent Square has become a vibrant community. Join fellow residents in celebrating our 50th anniversary.
